US Issued Increased Travel Advisory To This Destination Due To 'Crime And Unrest'

We all love a good vacation. Whether you prefer a sandy beach, a cabin in the woods, or a day at the spa, nothing beats the chance to get away and leave your troubles behind. However, if you are looking to travel internationally, you need to be aware of all travel advisories and restrictions. Recently, the US issued an increased travel advisory to this popular destination. Reports indicate that the new advisory comes after increased "crime and unrest" within the country.

The US Issued An Increased Travel Advisory To This Destination

If you were planning on taking a trip to Madagascar, you might want to think again. On September 27 of this year, the U.S. State Department issued an increased travel advisory against the country. It is now a Level 3 advisory. Considering there are only four levels, that is a pretty stern warning to avoid the country. According to the official US travel website, here are the four levels and their meanings.

  • Level 1 Exercise Normal Precautions: The lowest advisory, indicating some risk in any international travel.
  • Level 2 Exercise Increased Caution: Be aware of increased risks to safety and security.
  • Level 3 Reconsider Travel: Reconsider your travel to the destination due to serious risks to safety and security.
  • Level 4: Do not Travel: This is the highest advisory level due to life-threatening risks.

When a travel advisory is in place, the reasons for its issuance can be found on the corresponding page for that country or location.

According to their website, the U.S. State Department issued this advisory due to "crime and unrest" within the country of Madagascar. The description explains that protests have been occurring throughout the country, and they can "turn violent without warning." Furthermore, they warn travelers that "protesters have also engaged in rioting, looting, vandalism, and destruction of property." None of which sounds like something you would want to encounter on vacation.

Additionally, they warn travelers that "violent crime occurs throughout Madagascar, particularly after dark." Those crimes include, but are not limited to, "armed robbery and assault." The U.S. Embassy in Madagascar shared a demonstration alert on October 14, warning of demonstrations. They made the following statement for all U.S. citizens within the country.

"U.S. citizens are advised to remain indoors at night and avoid areas where protests or large gatherings occur. The Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo remains open, but U.S. citizens should contact airlines to confirm flight schedules before going to the airport."
