Father Of Four Killed By Shark Species Scientists Previously Believed To Be Harmless

A father of four tragically lost his life after he was attacked and killed by sharks. The father was killed by a shark species that scientists previously believed to be harmless, adding shock and confusion to the already daunting situation. Now, experts are trying to uncover the truth of what happened.

Father Of Four Killed By Surprising Shark Species

Barak Tzach was just enjoying a solo snorkel off the coast of Israel. I am sure when the father jumped into the water this past April, he never imagined it would be for the last time. Video footage shows the father of four being dragged out to sea by a shiver of sharks.  The footage was truly disturbing to watch. A plethora of bystanders stood on the beach and filmed the entire tragic event. They saw the moment that the father of four was killed by the shark species that scientists previously believed to be harmless.

In the video, you can see Tzach frantically flailing around, calling for assistance. The NY Post also shared that he man "tried in vain to push the advancing predators away with his GoPro stick." Unfortunately, it was to no avail. The thrashing of shark tails ensued, and the water quickly turned red. Months after the attack, scientists determined that the typically docile dusky shark was responsible.

What Caused The Attack

Shark attacks are horrendous, no matter what species is responsible. However, this attack stumped scientists as the dusky shark was typically seen as a harmless species. However, the father of four who was killed by the shark species might disagree. So, what prompted this normally docile creature to become violent? Scientists believe that the atypical attack was due to various factors, including "human error and ecological distortion."

These scientists argue that although dusky sharks can grow quite large, they typically avoid humans. However, the species has become less timid as locals continue to feed them and provide waste for them to munch on. The NY Post shares that "it is not uncommon for the sharks to approach divers in search of snacks." Is that what was happening here? Did this typically harmless species approach Tzach in search of a snack?

Then, when he failed to provide one, the father was killed by the shark species. The scientists think it is a possibility. Given the lack of snacks and the competitive food environment, it is not surprising that the shark would have attacked. Then, unfortunatley, once the first shark made a bite that produced blood, the frenzy began. Regarding the attack, the scientists had this to say.

"The situation likely occurred via a process of juxtaposition bites, with two distinct motivations: the first, a (probably single) reflex/clumsiness bite driven by food begging, and the second, several predatory bites triggered by a feeding frenzy."
