Barcelona is celebrated for many reasons. Ranging from its stunning Mediterranean beaches to its beautiful artwork to its culinary treats. However, another popular tourist attraction in Barcelona is its bar-hopping tours. Unfortunately, for those who loved their alcoholic nightlife, the popular European destination is now placing a ban on bar crawls.
The NY Post shares that "The Spanish party hotspot has forbidden pub crawls citywide, banning the promotion, organization, or running of any kind of guided drinking tour — all day, every day for at least the next four years." The Sun shared the reasoning behind this new ban. They reported that the move aims to "ensure peaceful coexistence, safeguard residents' right to rest, and protect public health."
Ban On Bar Crawls For The Public's Safety
During bar crawls, most people consume copious amounts of alcohol. After consuming several low-quality drinks, certain risk factors increase. For example, increased chances of disturbances in neighborhoods and additional strain on public spaces. Not to mention alcohol is often correlated with increased criminal behavior and or road safety violations.
Until recently, the ban on bar crawls only existed in two districts. Additionally, the ban was only between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. However, now the ban has extended across Barcelona, and it is all day and all night. While tour participants would not be fined for joining the tour, they could still face consequences. Such consequences could include being ticketed for public drinking, noise violations, or causing disturbances. However, the organizers of the bar crawls could "face fines of up to about $1,050."
Bar crawls have been a main attraction at this popular European destination for quite some time. Only time will tell how this new ban on bar crawls will affect tourism in Barcelona.
