Things are getting rough out there, thanks to the government shutdown, and some pet owners are being forced to make difficult decisions. They're getting rid of their dogs and pets.
Speaking with News4, those on SNAP benefits are concerned for November. The government announced it would not be giving out any benefits due to the shutdown. As a result, several pet owners are saying they have to choose between their pets and families.
Amy Creel, the president of Knine Rescue in Montgomery County, told News4 that she's received multiple phone calls from pet owners.
"If you are having to prioritize the basics, for some people, they're starting to look at their dog, and say 'I don't know if I can afford this,'" Creel said. "And they're devastated. They don't want to be in this situation. They don't want to surrender, but they're not sure what else to do."
Meanwhile, one anonymous pet owner said that she's going to probably have to give up her 2-year-old dog named Reese. She said with benefits cut off, she can't afford the pet.
Pet Owners Feel Strain
"Part of why I adopted him was for him to be a part of the family," she said. She added that the family spends "close to $400 a month [on the dog], give or take. And just can't manage that and put food on the table."
She may not be the only pet owner, either.
"It's just very sad, and I think an overlooked consequence of what's happening. I just don't think people expected that this was going to be a part of it," Creel also said. "We have to come together and find a solution in this incredibly wealthy country that we're in. I can't believe that people are having to beg for dog food right now."
Additionally, some pet owners are asking for extra food and donations for their animals. As a result, Knine Rescue is holding a pet food drive to help those who need the extra support.
