A 34-year-old man was killed by polar bears last year. Now, his family is opening up about the days leading up to his tragic demise.
Two polar bears attacked and killed the man on a remote Canadian island. Christopher Best had gone out to take photos of the animals. But on August 8, 2024, two polar bears attacked and killed him.
Speaking with The Canadian Press, his family said Best wasn't worried. He told them that there was no reason to fear the polar bears. Best worked at a radar site on Brevoort Island. During his breaks, he would photograph the bears.
"They're not close to us," Best told his family. "You know, I know [the] difference, right?"
Polar Bears Attack
Best tried to retreat back inside. But the second bear cut him off from escape. It then proceeded to attack him. The two bears fatally mauled him outside the facility. The family was horrified to learn about the death of their son.
"I don't think he would have went out if he would have known that second bear was there," his mother told The Canadian Press. "We were just in shock."
The company said in a statement, "We care deeply for the safety and well-being of all our employees and feel for everyone who continues to be affected by this tragic incident."
