Chinese Temple Goes Up In Flames – Irresponsible Tourist Potentially To Blame

While tourists contribute nicely to the economy, they also often leave destruction in their wake. While it is usually in the form of garbage or litter, sometimes it can be even more drastic. Such was the case in China when a Chinese Temple went up in flames. Although investigations are still pending, authorities believe an irresponsible tourist is to blame.

The NY Post shares that the Chinese temple Wenchang Pavilion suffered a massive fire on Wednesday, Nov. 12. This temple was commissioned in 2008 and built in 2009. Additionally, it was a beloved landmark by locals and tourists alike. Although an investigation is still underway, the outlet shares that "a fire likely started by a tourist's 'irresponsible candle use' and clumsy incense handling."

The flames raced across the temple, engulging the three-story building. However, there were two silver linings. First, there were no casualties in the blaze, nor did the temple contain any ancient architectural remains. Second, the fire did not spread to any of the neighboring forests.

An Investigation Is Underway

As the investigation progresses, the outlet shared that local authorities are keen to take action once the culprit is found. Accident or not, having a Chinese temple go up in flames is an action that requires consequences. Additionally, officials shared that once the investigation is complete, they will begin the restoration process.  During that time, they will honor the traditional architectural style of the site.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a tourist has caused havoc while on their travels. Oftentimes, when visiting cultural sites, tourists worry more about their photo ops than respecting the site. Potentially even worse is that oftentimes tourists incorrectly interact with wildlife. Just recently, a hiker approached a pack of wolves in Yellowstone in a foolish attempt at bravado.
