Here I was excited over the two inches of snow we got in Virginia this past weekend. Apparently, that is nothing to be excited about, at least not to people in Wyoming, particularly in the snowy range. Certain areas in the snowy range received over 75 inches of snow, and the craziest part was that they got it all over the short span of 40 hours.
Wyoming's Snowy Range Gets 75 Inches Of Snow

In case 75 inches is a hard number to wrap your head around, that is over six feet of snow. That is insane to me! These massive amounts of snow were due to a polar vortex that swept through the area. Now, it is important to note that not all areas received the same amount of snowfall. Cowboy State Daily meteorologist Don Day did a great job of breaking down how much snowfall each area got.
He shared the following: "The Snowy Range and Sierra Madre got clobbered." Wyoming has specific monitoring stations and sensors to help determine the amount of snowfall. Day shares that "Those sites are designed to estimate the amount of snow based on the weight and water content in the snow."
According to the data, areas of the Snowy Range in Wyoming got hit the hardest with the 75 inches of snow. However, other areas were affected as well. The outlet shared that "The town of Centennial received 12 inches."
The Truth Behind The Measuring
Day explained how the snow monitoring systems work. He shared that "many of the monitoring stations and sensors are associated with the community they're closest to." However, that doesn't mean that one area received all the snow. Day elaborates, "that doesn't mean that Centennial got 65 inches of snow this weekend, but the higher peaks in the vicinity got that much and then some."
Based on this latest storm, it seems like Wyoming may be in for one snow-filled winter.
