The NY Post shared the surprising news that American Airlines has decided to "cut its program awarding bonus miles and other travel perks to passengers who purchase a basic economy ticket." Naturally, this upset many people. Not all of us can afford business or first-class tickets. Economy tickets are the most affordable flight tickets, and travelers should not be penalized for getting them.

In the past, fliers who were enrolled in the AAdvantage program "earned two miles and loyalty points for each dollar spent on a regular fee." However, now the rules have changed with this greedy announcement. Now, if you want your miles and points, you need to cough up the cash and pay for a more expensive ticket.

An announcement on the airline's website shared that " Basic Economy fare tickets bought on or after 12:00 a.m. CT on December 17, 2025, will not earn AAdvantage® miles or Loyalty Points."

The Internet Reacts

In addition to their website, a post was made on X highlighting the greedy announcement as well. The public did not react well to the news at all. Several of the comments called out American Airlines for its greedy behavior or lack of loyalty. Here are some of the comments that were left under the post.

  • "I've been loyal to you for work travel, but this year has been terrible, and this is just the nail in the coffin."  "I'm done with you and taking my work travel somewhere else, like United."
  • "I, too, have been loyal to AA and have maintained my gold status even after my work travel became null, but now I won't be able to do it. I relied on your basic fares and the surveys to keep me there. Forget marketplace, think about your customers."
  • "Interesting...no loyalty to customers? That's fine, Delta and United are great options."
  • Another responded with, "This is a garbage response and change. You will lose loyalty."
