A father of five has died after being swept out to sea in California. He was struck by a sneaker wave while eel fishing with a friend and his children in Klamath on January 31.
Sadly, authorities later located his body on February 3. The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office confirmed the death in a statement. 37-year-old Maximo Macanas sadly died after being swept out to sea. He was a husband and father of five kids. Authorities recovered his body near Whaler Island.
Police wrote, "Del Norte County Sheriff's Office sends condolences to the family and friends of Maximo Gordon Edward Macanas. He was located today by a local sport vessel and pronounced deceased by the Del Norte County Sheriff - Coroner's Office at 1:26 pm. Thank you to all of the agencies that responded and to family, friends and community members as well."
Swept Out To Sea
His family confirmed his passing in a Facebook post, "With heavy hearts, we share that Maximo Macanas has been found. We are deeply grateful to this community for your support in spreading the word during our search and for keeping local fishermen vigilant. Max was discovered by a local fishermen just off Whaler Island this afternoon, Tuesday, February 3rd."
They also added, "Thank you for your kind messages and posts; your compassion means the world to us. As we begin to prepare for services, we find comfort in knowing that Max is now back with his family. We truly couldn't have navigated this without your support. The funds will assist with funeral services and help Hannah and her boys as they begin this next chapter in their lives."
So far, the fundraiser has raised more than $22,000 for the family of the deceased fisherman and father.
