Florida Fisherman Dies After Boat Strikes Rock Jetty

A Florida fisherman has sadly passed away after a boat crash. His vessel struck a rock jetty, slinging him from the boat. He was just 27 years old.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed the deadly boating crash, which happened Punta Gorda, Charlotte County, on Saturday, Nov. 1.

"Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 9:07 p.m., an individual was operating a 22' vessel in Charlotte Harbor near Fisherman's Village Marina when the vessel crashed into a rock jetty, ejecting the operator," the agency said. "Nearby good Samaritans and a [Punta Gorda Police Department] officer pulled the operator out of water and began performing lifesaving measures."

"On behalf of all The FWC we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time," the agency said.

Speaking with People, Charlotte County Administrator Hector Flores offered condolences to the family.

"On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners and all of my Charlotte County colleagues, I want to express our deepest condolences to the Knowlton family on the death of Nicholas Knowlton. We will all be holding the family close to our hearts, especially his mother and our dear colleague, County Attorney Janette Knowlton, as they endure this tragic loss. Please respect the privacy of the Knowlton family during this difficult period," Flores said.

Meanwhile, his family mourned the loss of the fisherman in an obituary.

"Nick filled his passion and love for the water through his own charter boat company, which he proudly named Fish Whistle Charters," it read. "Everyone he met became his friend. If you saw him on the water, you saw just a glimpse of the light within him. He always gave freely to others - his time, his help, and his care.

"He strived daily to leave the harbor a better place than when he found it, whether it was cleaning up hurricane debris, helping veterans book trips, or lending a helping hand to other charter captains. His love for the water was unwavering," the tribute continued.
