A grizzly bear attack in Canada has left 11 people injured. The animal targeted a group of elementary school students and teachers. At least two people are in critical condition. Another two suffered serious injuries.
The attack happened at Acwsalcta School on Thursday. The resulting grizzly attack created a chaotic scene at the school. Emergency responders sent multiple ambulances and a helicopter to the school. "Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to four patients and transported them to the hospital. Two patients were in critical condition and two were in serious condition," Emergency Health Services spokesman Brian Twaites said via Daily Mail.
Meanwhile, parent Veronica Schooner said that a grizzly attacked the Year 4-5 class. Her son Alvarez had been in the group. They had gone on a walk when the bear appeared.
"He was running for his life," she said. A teacher was severely injured trying to protect the students from the grizzly bear. She also said that three children suffered major injuries as well. Her son is traumatized after the close call with the grizzly. "He said that bear ran so close to him, but it was going after somebody else."
Grizzly Attacks Students
She said her son was in shock. She continued, "Everybody was in shock at the school. A lot of people were crying, and I don't know, I just wanted my son, and I grabbed him, and then I took him home."
After the attack, the grizzly remains on the loose in the area. Authorities are trying to track down the animal. "Officers are armed. Remain indoors and off the highway," the First Nation said in a social media post.
Jayme Kennedy, the chair of the Central Coast Regional District, released a statement about the grizzly attack. She said, "We are all feeling devastation as we try to understand the magnitude of the attack and navigate what has happened."
Meanwhile, Acwsalcta School closed the school after the attack. "It's hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students," the post said.
