Heartbreaking Final Message Man Told Family Before Being Killed By Polar Bears

A 34-year-old man was killed by polar bears last year. Now, his family is opening up about the days leading up to his tragic demise.

Two polar bears attacked and killed the man on a remote Canadian island. Christopher Best had gone out to take photos of the animals. But on August 8, 2024, two polar bears attacked and killed him.

Speaking with The Canadian Press, his family said Best wasn't worried. He told them that there was no reason to fear the polar bears. Best worked at a radar site on Brevoort Island. During his breaks, he would photograph the bears.

"They're not close to us," Best told his family. "You know, I know [the] difference, right?"

While he worked a a fuel tank cleaner, his passion was photography. He posted pictures on his social media accounts including a photo of a polar bear just a day before he died. "Polar Bear hanging around the site at BAF-3," Best wrote.

Polar Bears Attack

On August 8, his fascination with the animals proved to be deadly. After finishing a shift, he learned from colleagues that a bear was outside the facility. Grabbing his camera, he went outside to photograph the bear. However, Best was unaware that there was more than one polar bear. The second polar bear caught him by surprise.

Best tried to retreat back inside. But the second bear cut him off from escape. It then proceeded to attack him. The two bears fatally mauled him outside the facility. The family was horrified to learn about the death of their son.

"I don't think he would have went out if he would have known that second bear was there," his mother told The Canadian Press. "We were just in shock."

Best's death was the first reported polar bear death related to North Warning System and DEW Line. The companies sad that no reported injuries or deaths from bears had appeared in the past 70 years.

The company said in a statement, "We care deeply for the safety and well-being of all our employees and feel for everyone who continues to be affected by this tragic incident."
