In a tragic turn of events, a man is dead after being attacked and killed by a wild elephant. The incident happened at a logging site in Malaysia. The man was attacked not once but twice.
According to locals news site Malay Mail, a wild elephant killed 43-year-old Saidi Jahari. His coworkers later found him deceased in the early hours of October 29. According to Sik Choon Foo, superintendent of the District Police, the animal attacked Saidi twice.
Saidi had been the site supervisor for the logging site. He was asleep in tents with some co-workers. The team heard the elephants approaching them. The rest of the team managed to flee the area, but Saidi hadn't been so lucky. Workers returned later and found the supervisor laying there with two broken legs.
Wild Elephant Kills Man
"They brought the victim inside the communal house for temporary protection. However, not long after, a bull elephant, believed to be the herd leader, returned and attacked them again," Sik said. The workers fled to save themselves, leaving the man at the mercy of the animal.
"After the area calmed, the group returned and found the victim was no longer there. Searches nearby discovered Saidi deceased on the exit path, with severe injuries consistent with being trampled by an elephant," Sik said.
Following his death, Saidi's younger brother, Sulaiman Jahari, mourned the loss of his brother. He remembered the last time that he had seen his brother alive.
"I did not expect that it would be our final meeting. Usually, he was quiet and did not talk much about work, but during dinner he was cheerful and lively," he said.
"This area was newly opened for logging. During all his years of work, he had never spoken about encounters with wild animals," he said.
