After a pilot shared a snap of his recent paycheck, many people are debating if they chose the wrong career path. Let's just say that the number had a lot of zeros at the end of it. Find out just how much pilots get paid for flying high in the sky.
How Much Do Pilots Get Paid?

To begin, not all pilots make the same wage. Instead, there are a few contributing factors that determine how much cash a pilot will receive in a given year. First and foremost, it depends on the airline that they work for. Additionally, it depends on the number of hours that they have flown in that year. As is the case with most jobs, the more hours worked, the more money you make. The pilot who chose to share their paycheck is a captain at American Airlines. Breaking Aviation News and Videos shared a photo of the paystub on X (formerly Twitter). The post gained quite a reaction.
The caption with the photo shared that the salary belonged to a "Miami-based American Airlines Boeing 737 captain." The pilot had apparently shared their salary on Reddit and left a majority of people speechless. Perhaps that is because of the enormous number at the end of the paystub. According to the photo, this pilot received an end-of-year salary of $457,894.51. I don't know how much I thought pilots got paid, but it certainly wasn't that much. Now I see why people are debating if they made the wrong career choice.
Is This The Norm?
When I saw how much this paystub was worth, I assumed this pilot was in the top-earning percentage of pilots. After all, there is no way that all pilots get paid so much. The post elaborated that this particular American Airlines captain had an hourly wage of $360. However, several comments suggested that that is not the highest pay for pilots. In fact, the X post argued that "wideboy pilots earn around 24% higher and pay increases through to 2027 under their current contract." While that number is something that people could only dream of, I have to say I think that they earn it.
After all, it is the pilots who keep us safe when we are high in the sky. While we are all snoozing on our long flights and watching our films, they are focused and navigating terrain, weather, and, I am sure, a host of other things. At the end of the day, while I envy the number on their paystubs, I fully support their earnings. These pilots get me safely from one destination to another, and that is priceless to me. After this paystub reveal, I have a feeling there may be a lot more people applying to be a pilot.
