Proactive Or Paranoid? Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Pilot Hears Knock On Cockpit Door

I do not envy pilots their job. First, I am not the biggest fan of heights or flying, so their job is stressful enough right off the bat. Then, they have to deal with all of the bizarre passengers and potential security risks there. Granted, flight attendants deal with that more, but it is not unheard of for potentially dangerous passengers to make their way to the cockpit. That is what begs the question: Was this pilot proactive or paranoid? After mistaking a knock on the cockpit door for an attempted break-in, this pilot decides to make an emergency landing.

A small miscommunication caused a huge commotion. People Magazine reported that a "Los Angeles-bound flight returned to its origin point" in Omaha, Nebraska, due to a miscommunication. Apparently, the miscommunication started after the pilot heard knocking on the cockpit door. However, it was not the knock alone that spooked him. Additionally, he had lost contact with the crew. Prefering to be safe than sorry, the pilot took the lack of contact and the mysterious knocking seriously.

In a statement to People Magazine, SkyWest argued that the flight "returned to Omaha out of an abundance of caution after experiencing communication issues with the flight crew mic." The knocker turned out to be one of the flight attendants, who tried to reach the pilot after realizing they could not due to a system failure. I understand the pilot's choice to make an emergency landing.

I hear more and more often of unruly passengers posing a flight risk. Not to mention that the inability to communicate could have pointed to an issue with the aircraft, which is an entirely new safety issue. Luckily, the plane made its emergency landing safely, and passengers and crew were all fine. Hours later, the plane was cleared for takeoff once again.
