Some minor bumps are commonplace during a flight. After all, you cannot control the weather. However, the bumps that these Ryanair passengers and flight crew had to endure were the complete opposite. The NY Post reported that the flight left from the UK and was on its way to Spain's Canary Islands when it experienced " a severe bout of turbulence." One of the passengers aboard the flight spoke to Birmingham Live about the stressful incident. That passenger "compared the turbulence to something out of a horror movie."
The 33-year-old woman, who has chosen to stay anonymous, shared that the flight departed from Birmingham Airport "at approximately 2:50 pm on Sunday, December 28, and issued an emergency signal (squawk 7700) over Brittany, France, after reaching an altitude of 35,000ft." Additionally, the passenger shared that the plane jerked suddenly and passengers were "flung out of their seats."
Furthermore, the severe turbulence occurred while cabin service was in progress, meaning that several people were injured by the quick thrusting of the plane.
The Flight Turns Around
After the terrifying moment, the Ryanair flight decided to turn around and head back to its place of departure. After only an hour and a half of flying, the Ryanair flight landed back at Birmingham airport. The NY Post shared that "Paramedics met the passengers and crew upon arrival and tended to the wounded." Although the extent of their injuries remains unclear, one thing is for certain: this is a flight that no one on the passengers or crew will ever forget.
Those who were uninjured returned to the terminal. Later that evening, they boarded a replacement aircraft and arrived at their destination six hours behind schedule.
