Texas Zoo Mourns The Loss Of Viral Gorilla That Loved Breakdancing And Whitney Houston

A Texas zoo is in mourning after the loss of their beloved gorilla, who loved breakdancing and Whitney Houston. The ape passed away at 23.

In a statement, Dallas Zoo confirmed the viral internet sensation, Zola, has died. The gorilla passed away on November 5 after falling ill.

The zoo wrote, "Late last week, before preparations for the bachelor troop's upcoming move began. Zola began showing symptoms of lethargy, reduced appetite, and signs of discomfort. He was monitored around the clock and received fluids, antibiotics, and other supportive treatments. Our teams also moved quickly through a full series of diagnostics, including imaging and lab work, to guide his care. "

The zoo continued, "On Wednesday, Zola underwent additional procedures in an effort to better understand and address his condition. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to begin breathing on his own afterward, despite the extraordinary efforts of our veterinary and animal care teams. With his comfort as our priority, we made the difficult decision to let him go peacefully. A full necropsy is underway, which may help us better understand what contributed to Zola's decline."

Gorilla Passes Away

The gorilla went viral in 2021 on TikTok for his breakdancing ability.

"It's been shared so many times — we still have people reach out asking to use it for things," former Dallas Zoo communications manager Chelsey Norris told the Dallas Observer in September 2021. "Green Day used it in their music video 'Father of All.'"

The outpouring of sorrow over the death of the gorilla has been immense.

"WE LOVED HIM EVEN BEFORE BE EVEN TRULY KNEW HIM," the zoo's President and CEO Tim Morrow wrote. "We were very much looking forward to welcoming him and his troop to their new home. Animal Care staff at zoos often spend more time at the zoo caring for the animals than they do at their own homes. Their passion and compassion is unmatched."

Others also mourned the loss of the animal in the comment section as well.

The zoo wrote, "Zola was a beloved member of our bachelor troop and was known for his playful personality and big heart. He loved showing off his breakdancing moves, spinning and splashing in water, a talent that made him a true internet star. Our zoologists will remember him for his love of music, especially Whitney Houston songs during enrichment sessions, and his silly bipedal runs that never failed to make them smile."
