'Hero' Dog Saves Owner's Life

It was a typical Monday night for Hannah and Adam. The couple went to sleep like any other night, expecting that nothing was amiss. Luckily for them, their dog Polly has an incredible protective instinct. As Adam was sleeping, the golden retriever noticed that his breathing was slightly off. After a moment, she began barking to alert her other owner, Adam's wife Hannah, to the situation. Luckily, the barking woke Hannah. Afterward, she quickly noticed that Adam was not breathing and dialed 999. In a video, she shared that the paramedics walked her through exactly what to do next.
First, she had to move her husband off the floor and down to the bed. Afterward, she had to begin CPR and maintain it for the seven minutes that it took the first responders to arrive at the scene. After arriving at the scenes, the paramedics continued with Adam's life-saving care and transported him "straight to the hospital as soon as they possibly could." In the video, Hannah admits that "Any more minutes that went on, it would have been a very different story." Despite Adam being a "fit and healthy runner," it was his beloved dog and wife that saved his life. Without Polly's alerting Hannah, she would have never known Adam was in distress.

Both Adam and Hannah are so thankful for their 'Hero' dog that saved Adam's life. When speaking with BBC News, Hannah had this to say about their beloved dog, who saved her owner's life. "With a cardiac arrest, everything I've learned since, it all happens in seconds, and Polly gave me those seconds." Furthermore, Hannah argued that Polly was "so in tune with Adam" that she believed "Adam had just started the arrest as she barked." Adam agrees that he is forever thankful for his beloved wife and dog. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Hannah and Polly," he admitted. PEOPLE shared that both ladies were honored as CPR Heroes at the charity's 2025 Heart Hero Awards.
