As someone who just returned from domestic travels, let me be the first to tell you that REAL ID has completely changed the game. Checkpoints at airport security have become vastly stricter. The new systems implemented leave little to no room for error, and if you don't have one of the acceptable forms of identification, you aren't allowed to travel. What's even worse is that TSA is now charging passengers who do not have acceptable ID at airport checkpoints.

Although it has been discussed for years, REAL ID is finally here and it is changing the face of travel. Failure to comply may not only inhibit your travel plans but now it may also cost you money. The NY Post shared that "TSA will now charge passengers $18 if they show up at the airport checkpoints without an acceptable form of identification."
TSA charging passengers who do not have acceptable ID is part of their new identity verification program. The Post shared the following excerpt from one of TSA's published notices. "This modernized program provides an alternative that may allow these individuals to gain access to the sterile area of an airport if TSA is able to establish their identity. The fees are to cover any "government-incurred costs" and would be valid for use for 10 days.
Refusal To Accept REAL ID Could Lead To Paying
The premise of this program is those travelers who do not have the acceptable forms of ID could pay a non-refundable fee to "request an alternative identity verification." This aternate verification is supposed to assist in getting through airport security and would remian valid for 10 days. However, there is a catch. Just because you pay for the identity verification, you are not guaranteed approval.
Thus meaning you could pay the $18 and still be denied access at airport security. Alternatively you may get through security but you could be subject to "additional screening or expereince delays."
