SeaWorld Icon Passes Away At Age 50: "Family Is Mourning The Loss"

A SeaWorld icon has tragically died at the age of 50. The aquatic theme park is saying goodbye to one of its killer whales named Katina.

In a social media post, SeaWorld Orlando shared that Katina has passed away at 50.

"Our SeaWorld family is mourning the loss of one of our beloved killer whales, Katina," the theme park wrote. "Katina was 50 years old, and her health had begun to significantly decline as she entered her geriatric years."

SeaWorld Orlando staff monitored Katina, but there was little they could do to treat the animal. Ultimately, they could only be with her in the end. They wrote, "The decision was made to prioritize her comfort and welfare."

"Despite everyone's extraordinary efforts, she passed away while surrounded by animal care and medical teams who have worked closely with her for nearly 40 years," SeaWorld Orlando continued.

Katina will be missed by fans and staff alike. She had a colorful personality. The orca regularly stuck her tongue out and also created water tornadoes by spinning fast. "For many wonderful years, Katina awed and inspired millions of our guests to appreciate and learn more about this amazing species," SeaWorld Orlando wrote.

"This is an incredibly difficult time for those who knew and loved Katina. We appreciate the support of the community as we grieve her loss together with her loyal fans everywhere," the theme park concluded.

Following the death of the orca, several took to the comment board to mourn the loss.

One person wrote, "I am so thankful we were able to see her. We love SeaWorld and all the work they do! I am so sorry for your loss!"

Another reflected on seeing the orca at the park.

"I've got a lot of fond memories of seeing her when I was younger. 50 years is a pretty respectable age for a killer whale, too," the person wrote.

Following the death of Katina, the theme park canceled several shows.
