PEOPLE shared that the Blue Wave above-ground pools have been recalled for safety concerns. The outlet shared that the specific recalled pools are "48 inches or taller." Additionally, they "include a feature that is considered a serious safety concern for children." The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shared the details around the feature that was causing safety concerns.
They wrote, "The recalled above-ground pools contain a compression strap (also referred to as a reinforcing belt) that wraps around the pool on the outside of the vertical support poles." That compression strap allows children easier access to the pool and increases their chances of drowning. Additionally, the CPSC shared why that belt is dangerous. They wrote, "Children can still gain access to the pools using these footholds even if the ladder is removed."
Moving Forward
Families who have already purchased this above-ground pool have been advised how to proceed amid the recall. The CPSC shares that those who have the Blue Wave pools should "ensure children cannot access the pool unattended." Or, if that is not possible, then those families should "drain the pool until the repair can be installed."
Furthermore, all those who have the Blue Wave pool should contact the company and request a free repair kit to resolve the issue. Alternatively, you could email the company as well. The current acting chairman of CPSC, Peter A. Fedlman, spoke out on the matter. In a statement, he shared that "Today's recall of nearly 13,500 additional Chinese-made above-ground pools addresses a dangerous design flaw that has resulted in at least nine deaths over the past 15 years."
After he addressed how the previous leadership refused to take the matter seriously, he stated that he would not make the same mistake. He assured the public, "Under new leadership, CPSC is committed to addressing the number one killer of children: drowning." Finally, he ended his statement by saying that "Protecting children from the most serious product hazards must always be one of CPSC's top priorities."
